The Green Wave

Many years ago there was a stretch of road in the town near where I live that had many junctions controlled by traffic lights. If you were lucky, and drove at the speed limit of 30 miles per hour, you could drive through about 10 of these sets of lights for about 2 miles without being stopped. Then suddenly you couldn’t. No explanation was given. Now it turns out that the abandonment of this scheme was to cynically raise fuel consumption and hence the taxes paid to the government. Now that other “green” issues abound we may get our “Green Wave” back. Perhaps we can now look forward to the removal of speed humps and the filling in of holes in the road – all of which lead to raised fuel consumption and raised CO2 production.
