Whatever Happened to Steve Martin?
Just watching LA Story (1991) and wondering why it was the last great movie that Steve Martin made. OK, he had help from a bunch of Great Brits, Mick Jackson (director) Victoria Tennant, Patrick Stewart and Richard E Grant (OK he’s from Swaziland, which makes him more English than most), and Sarah Jessica Parker at her kookiest, and the reinforcement of every prejudice that you have ever heard of, or ever held, about LA. I think it is the absence of Kids or french accents. Steve, a word to the wise. Ditch the Schmaltz and get back to the whimsical.

Have you seen ‘Shopgirl’? No schmaltz at all. Not a comedy – not even of the bitterly ironic type. A Steve Martin film.
I agree the ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ ilk are mildly amusing but not worthy of Martin’s talent.
‘LA Story’ remains one of my own person favorites.
