I don't care about…

…the Olympics.

When I was a kid I remember the excitement as an Olympic games approached.  I’d get all the magazine supplements and the special stickerbooks and pour over the minutiae of Waterpolo and Handball.  Now the whole thing leaves me cold.  Partly because the whole shebang is now so overwrought and overblown.  The way that China is exploting it for self-agrandiement, the way that the Russians are using it as cover to invade Georgia, they way that many of the athletes will be holding their breath as the drug tests are performed all combine to kill my interest in it.

In 2012 London will host the Olympics.  I intend to spend the time walking the Pennine Way, celebrating the 10th annivesary of the first time that Keith and I completed it.

  1. I agree there is something rather sad about the state of the Olympics in the 21st century. For me, it began to go wrong in the late 20th when the US allowed non-amateurs to participate.
