The Vista is obscured by clouds.

So far, I have managed to avoid using Vista, the not-terribly-old operating system from Microsoft. However one of my clients has just bought a new computer which came with Vista pre-installed, and needed their data transferring from their old XP PC, as well as some other general setting up of wireless LAN etc.

I quickly realised that the poor reputation of Vista is well deserved. The new PC, a Dell Inspiron 1720, Intel Duo-core, 2 GB ram takes an age to boot up; the cursor movement is jerky and applications like Flight Simulator run at the same speed as my clients ancient 6 year old AMD based PC.

The Vista mail client wouldn’t recognise the imported data until it was fooled by adding an extra level to the file structure. The interface looks nice, unless you have seen a Mac, which looks even better, is cleaner and better thought out than Vista.

Vista wouldn’t recognise the bluetooth drivers for my clients’ mobile phone, and the manufacturer hasn’t produced new drivers, so we had to resort to 19th century cable technology.

All of this with no legacy software to support and few legacy devices. It is easy to see why any sensible corporate customer is steering well clear of Vista. Come on Microsoft. Admit it. Vista is a dog, a mangy sickly dog at that. Be kind and put it out of it’s misery.

As for me, I’m sitting here with my MacBook, running OSX Tiger, and Windows XP and Ubuntu via VMware fusion, multi-tasking the lot with no noticeable loss of performance and editing photos in Adobe Photoshop Elements to boot. I might buy a copy of Vista to run in VMware for researching customers problems, but I’ll never run another Windows OS as the primary OS on any computer I ever own.

  1. I havent had many problems with my vista machine to be honest. But I do understand what you are saying. XP was so much easier to deal with!!! There doesnt seem to be any advantage here to having Vista at all. None that I can find after using it for 6 months or so.

But, you are the PC guy! You know EVERYTHING….

  2. […] Windows XP on – all models, not just selected models that you allow to be downgraded to XP. (See my earlier rant about Vista). Oh and by the way Mike, you should know that your call center in India is encouraging […]
