My own personal Chaffinch.

So there I am, camped in Langdale, the second most beautiful place on the planet (Wasdale being #1). Because it’s not raining and it is June, the midges are rampant, having spent the wet weather sharpening their teeth (OK, I know midges don’t actually have teeth) so I have smothered myself in repellent bought at the Barn Door in the world’s most beautiful place, the drawback being that it appears to only work when freshly sprayed, and my bites are increasing and itching, and I like to scratch. So I found this gadget, Click-don’t scratch, which basically applies electric shocks to the bite, which seems to work, as well as taking anti-histamine tablets.

So there I am, camped in Langdale, the second most beautiful place on the planet, shocking my bites, and watching the swallows sweep low across the campsite feeding off the midges, while my own personal chaffinch hops around picking up crumbs from my dinner, Side Pike shining in the last of the evening sun, the babbling beck a few feet behind me. OK, so being near to the beck (and the trees) may encourage the midges, but on a campsite it has the wonderful effect of drowning out the noise from the snorers and the late-night talkers.

So there I am, camped in Langdale, the second most beautiful place on the planet, it has been a good day out on the hills. A bimble around the Langdale Pikes and High Raise with my friend Keith, followed by a few pints of Cumberland Ale at the Old Dungeon Gill, a dinner of curry and rice, and a drop of the good stuff for a night-cap. Not even the midges can spoil, it and my own personal chaffinch seems to be trying to help out on that front.
